Project Islandwood: iOS Apps im Microsoft Store – Wo sind sie?

Das “Project Astoria”, welches Android-Apps portieren sollte, ist gestorben. Also haben sich alle an das “Project Islandwood” geklammert, damit neben den Windows-, Windows-Phone- und den Universal-Apps auch weitere sehr interessante Apps im Microsoft Store erscheinen könnten. Die Betonung liegt auf “könnten”. Denn eine Diskussion auf Reddit – speziell die User Aditya1311 und tonyunreal – bringen es eigentlich auf den Punkt, warum der Store noch nicht geflutet wurde.

The bridge only supports apps using iOS 7 APIs as of now. This is years out of date.

Even assuming 1 & 2 above are not an issue, porting apps even with such a bridge is not a zero-effort process.

"I know it’s supposed to be a compatibility layer for windows development instead of an emulator, but with this approach, even if islandwood is fully api compatible with the iOS one day, I’m 100% certain that my same piece of code will look or run differently between iOS and Windows. Barely thinking of the effort to make existing app code to run on windows for me is unacceptable, not to mention the need of sugar coating all the UI solely for islandwood…
I see islandwood as nothing but a gimmick."

Ich muss gestehen, dass ich mich um die Portierung von Apps bisher nicht gekümmert habe bzw. sie mich nicht interessiert hat. Aber wenn man schon liest, dass die Portierung nur mit der veralteten iOS 7 API möglich ist, dann ist das Projekt schon gestorben, bevor es überhaupt angefangen hat.

Es sei denn, Microsoft legt nach und aktualisiert seine Bemühungen, um dann auch die aktuelle API der iOS Apps nutzen zu können.

Ich denke auch, dass der Aufwand, eine gute iOS App zu portieren, gar nicht so gering ist. Denn nicht alles kann per Klick umgewandelt werden. Aber auch das schreibt Aditya1311 in seinem “Statement” ja.
