Cyberfox wird auf Firefox 52 ESR umgestellt und eingestellt

Es gibt einige Browser die auf den Firefox setze. PaleMon, Waterfox als erste x64 Version oder eben auch der Cyberfox. Diesen gibt es nun schon seit 2012. Mozilla hat mit dem Firefox 52 angefangen Browser-Plugins zu deaktivieren und viele weitere Änderungen vorgenommen. Gestern hat sich nun der Ersteller von Cyberfox im Forum mit seiner zukünftigen Richtung zu Wort gemeldet und das wird wohl keinem Nutzer des Browsers so wirklich passen. Denn der Cyberfox wird vom Release-Channel auf ESR umgestellt. Damit erhält er noch in den nächsten 12 Monaten Sicherheitsupdates, aber keinen neuen Features mehr.

"Over the years the Cyberfox project has grown immensely and its thanks to all the amazing support of our users and has been an amazing couple of years this however has demanded far more of my time causing me to drop allot of projects and passions id like to pursue, the time factor this project has demanded has also take a toll lifestyle wise as have the changes made by Mozilla requiring more and more time to maintain so its come to a point where i recently had to assess the direction of this project and the direction i wish to head for the future. This has being no easy choice and the last few months allot of thinking about the direction of this project has taken place."

Nun aber mit den Änderungen von Mozilla wird es immer schwieriger das Projekt zu halten. Die Zeit die dafür geopfert wird ist enorm. Daher auch der Umstieg auf die 52.0 ESR und dem langsamen Tod des Browsers.

"What does this mean, whats going to happen to cyberfox. Well Cyberfox 52.0 lands with some large changes dropping support for Windows Vista and switches over to the Firefox 52.0 ESR branch, this means cyberfox will only receive security updates for the next 12 months and no longer be on the rapid release schedule, this reduces the browsers maintenance level greatly why is this important, this allows for lifestyle changes and a chance to pursue the other directions that were put on hold for the Cyberfox project, how do these changes affect cyberfox well unless certain lifestyle changes are made being able to work on the project would become very limited causing a quick end to the project."

Auch wenn ich den Cyberfox nie benutzt hatte, ist es schon traurig zu sehen, dass so ein tollen Projekt nun eingestellt wird. Aber es ist wie so oft. Man fängt klein und mit Begeisterung an. Das Projekt wächst und zum Schluss nimmt es wie bei diesem Browser 3-6 Stunden pro Tag und das 7 Tage die Woche ein. Und auch Gesundheitsprobleme spielen bei ihm eine Rolle. Er bietet natürlich an, dass jemand den Quellcode zu nutzen, um mit dem Projekt weiterzumachen. Man wird sehen, ob sich jemand dem nun annehmen wird.
