Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update) – Changelog (English)

Only five days left until the release of the great Anniversary Update (Version 1607 / Build 14393.5) for Windows 10. But what are the new features? A complete changelog – short and simple:

User interface and other changes

• system-wide darkmode for certain apps (Settings, Store, Calculator etc.)
• synchronization of data between smartphone (Windows 10 Mobile) and PC
• Sticky Notes were replaced by an unfinished app
• native integration of Ubuntu Bash
• redesigned UAC dialog
• revamped lock screen
  • e-mail address is no longer displayed
  • new animation(s)
  • Cortana is now available on the lock screen
  • music control right from the lock screen
• agenda added to the calender in the system tray
• the clock is now displayed on all taskbars (multi monitor setups)
• Task View: windows can be displayed on all desktops
• a four finger gesture allows to switch between virtual desktops
• UWP-apps support iOS-style badges
• news emojis
• default color of emojis is yellow instead of gray
• Insider Hub and Feedback App were replaced by „Feedback Hub“
• Windows Defender Offline introduced
• Windows Defender is able to scan while third party antivirus programs are installed
• new Icons (File Explorer, Defender, Blu-ray etc.)
• music search icon to the top right of Cortana
• revamped Info Center
  • icon is now in the lower-right corner
  • icon shows more details (badges & logos)
  • priorization of notifications
  • set a maximum number of notifications for a specific app
  • dismiss notifications with a middle click
  • right click to mute notifications / go to settings
• revamped start menu
  • „all apps“ und „most used“ were merged
  • up to three recently added apps will now appear in the list
  • shortcuts on the left (shut down, File Explorer etc.)
  • „all apps“ list is now full screen in tablet mode
• Cortana: settings were seperated from the notebook
• Windows Ink Workspace added
• command prompt looks better on high-res displays
• new apps: Quick Assist & Skype Preview
• new keyboard shortcuts
  • „ + Alt + D“ opens the taskbar clock
  • „ + F“ creates a screenshot an sends it to the Feedback Hub
  • „ + Shift + C“ opens Cortana (listening)

Microsoft Edge

• extension support
• support for web notifcations
• you can now pin tabs
• right clicking the URL bar allows to navigate directly to the URL stored in the clipboard
• optional: delete browser data (cache, history etc.) automatically when you exit Edge
• optional: show icons in the Favorites bar (no labels)
• it is possible to create folders direct in the Favorites bar
• favourites can be renamed directly in the Favorites bar
• favorites are now arranged in a tree structure
• you can set a specific folder for downloads
• optional: before each download Microsoft Edge asks, what to do („save“, „save as“ & „cancel“)
• right clicking „back“ shows the websites visited last
• symbols for „Hub“, „Note“ and „Share“ disappear when you scale down the width of the window
• import favorites from Firefox
• active downloads – Edge warns you before closing
• swipe gestures („next“ und „back“) for touchscreens
• various improvements to the core (support for new web technologies etc.)

Settings

• new design
• new settings for synchronization
• settings for taskbar added (under „personalization“)
• delete temporary files, downloads and recycle bin via the settings app
• you can now add „active hours“ for Windows Update – you will not be interrupted in this period
• update notications redirect to the update history
• „Device Portal“ for developers
• new setting to auto hide taskbar in tablet mode
• Quick Settings are now completly customizable
• settings for the stylus have been extended
• reset apps via settings app
• „Project to this PC“ under „System“ added (Miracast)
• apps can be assigned to websites
• optional: auto login to finish upgrade installation
• settings for, Remote Desktop and PowerShell added under „For developers“

Apps

Of course some, apps have received major updates. Since these changes were partially distributed also to users of earlier versions of Windows 10, we do not consider them in this list. The Store was updated for example.
