Open RegEdit
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad++.exe\DefaultIcon
(If DefaultIcon doesn't exist, create it under New > key)
Create a new string value and set it to C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll,70
It should look like what you want when you're done:
Count to the icon you want to use - the dll or Folder contains the text pad icon
Note that you don't have to sign out to refresh the Icon cache,
you can simply refresh it via command line:
For Windows 10 use %windir%\system32\ie4uinit.exe -show.
Try rebuilding the icon cache using Disk Cleanup.
Or Simply sign out and back in- to see the change.
