Reparatur einer (unfreiwillig entstandenen) Dual-Bootumgebung UEFI/Legacy Boot

Problembeschreibung:

Ich hatte mich der UEFI-Bootumgebung (samt UEFI-Partition und GPT-Partitionstabelle) einer Windows 64-Installation erfolgreich nachträglich entledigt - ohne Datenverlust der umfangreichen Windows-Installation. Zweck: die Installation sollte danach nur noch im Legacy/MBR-Modus zu starten. Die Günde für diese komplizierte Modifikation stehen hier nicht zur Debatte. Auch die BIOS-Einstellungen auf dem Asus H97M-PLUS Board sollen hier nicht weiter diskutiert werden.

Bei der Umwandlung vom UEFI-Modus in den Legacy/MBR-Modus handelte es sich noch um eine Windows 7 64-Bit Installation. Danach gab es natürlich auch keine UEFI-Startpartition mehr. Wie man sich leicht vorstellen kann, war diese Umstellung sehr aufwändig.

Erstaunlicherweise klappte ein erst kürzliches Upgreade von Windows 7-64/MBR auf die Version 1903 von Windows 10-64/MBR völlig reibungslos (alles auf der System-Partition einer Festplatte mit MBR-Partionierung).

Erstaunlicherweise deshalb, weil der latente - nicht systemkonforme - UEFI-Modus, auf der MBR-Systempartition(!) auch unter Windows 10-64 funktioniert - jeweils nach vorheriger F8-Bootauswahl(!) des UEFI-Modus auf dem Mainboard. Dieser seltsame UEFI-Bootmodus funktionierte aber auf schon auf der (umgewandelten) Windows 7-64-Bit-MBR-Installation. Dass es sich wirklich um Booten im UEFI-Modus handelt, kann man testen, obwohl die benutze, nicht konforme UEFI-Bootumgebung komplett auf der Systempartition liegt.

Nun komme ich zu meiner eigentlichen Frage:

Da unter diesen Bedingungen der (parasitäre) UEFI-Bootmodus bei Reparaturen der Boot-Umgebung fast zwangsläufig zu Problemen führt, möchte ich ihn unter Vermeidung negativer Nebeneffekte beseitigen.

Welche - möglichst minmalen - Modifikationen würden dazu führen, dass das UEFI-BIOS des Mainboard und die Windows-Reparatur-Umgebung auf keinen Fall mehr den UEFI-Modus errät?

Verstehe da im Moment nur Bahnhof.

Wie ist den Windows jetzt installiert? UEFI Modus oder BIOS Modus? Wenn BIOS Mode, mit Systempartition oder ohne?

Aus C:\Windows nichts löschen.

Und warum eigentlich diese Umwandlung von UEFI/GPT nach BIOS/MBR überhaupt?

Richtig. Die Umwandlung habe ich selbst zusammengebastelt und irgendwie hinbekommen, nachdem meine Reparaturversuche nach einem Cloning der System-Partition auf eine MBR-partitionierte Festplatte (ohne UEFI-Partition) mit den Reparaturtools einer Windows 7-Installations-ISO zwangsläufig fehlschlagen mussten.
Wie sollten die Windows-Tools auch "wissen", dass ich nicht nur eine Reparatur sondern auch einen Wechsel von einer UEFI- zu einer Legacy/MBR-Bootumgebung vorhatte.

Gut, wie Du das jetzt gemacht hast, ist eigentlich nicht so wichtig, Hauptsache die Startpartition befindet sich auf einem Datenträger mit MBR und es existiert dann in der Startpartition der Ordner Boot.

Das die Windows Reparaturtools versagt haben, liegt einfach daran, dass keine Systempartition gefunden wurde. Mit einer gemeinsamen System-/Startpartition kommen die Tools nicht klar. Das ist normal. Außerdem muss man auch beim Boten des Installationsdatenrägers darauf achten, ob man diesen im BIOS- oder UEFI Modus startet. Je nach Bootmodus verhält es sich anders.

Wenn jetzt die der Ordner EFI auf einer NTFS Partition liegt, dürfte ein Booten im UEFI Modus gar nicht mehr möglich sein, da UEFI i.d.R. kein NTFS lesen kann. Kann natürlich sein, dass Du eines der seltene ASUS Boards hast, welche eine ntfs.efi besitzen und somit NTFS lesen können. Hatte ich auch mal. Dann geht das natürlich. Aber i.d.R. wird eine FAT32 Partition zum Booten erwartet.

Gut, dann würde ich jetzt einfach in das UEFI gehen, hier den Bootmodus auf BIOS only (oder Legacy only) umstellen und den Ordner C:\EFI löschen. Setzt dann aber voraus, dass es den Ordner C:\Boot gibt, die Partition als 'Aktiv' markiert ist und alle Bootsektoren geschrieben wurden.

Durch Deinen Hinweis bin ich auf die Rolle des BIOS aufmerksam geworden.

Meine parasitäre UEFI-Boot-Umgebung hat nun dort einen Fehler aufgedeckt, der aber gleichzeitig zur vermutlichen Fehlerbeseitigung beiträgt:

Der BIOS-Fehler:
Dual-Booting über "F8"-Bootauswahl in den UEFI- bzw. Legacy-BIOS-Modus ist möglich, obwohl ich für alle Devices im BIOS "Legacy OPROM only" eingestellt habe.

Nun konnte ich aber diesen Fehler dazu ausnutzen, den Bootmechanismus des Asus-Boards zu erkennen:

Ich habe das C:\EFI Verzeichnis einfach umbenannt.

Nun ist in der "F8"-Bootauswahl der UEFI-Startmodus verschwunden. Das ist ein beachtlicher Fortschritt.

"Legacy OPROM only" hat nichts mit dem Bootmodus des Datenträgers zu tun, also wie Windows gestartet werden soll. Das steuert bloß , wie die Firmware von Hardwarekomponenten geladen werden sollen, also UEFI oder BIOS oder automatische Wahl. Das hängt aber davon ab, ob die Hardware das auch unterstützt. An den Einstellungen würde ich nichts ändern, da das UEFI und das CSM am Besten wissen, wie sie die Hardware starten und dem System zur Verfügung stellen.

Wenn Du auf UEFI Boot verzichten willst, muss auf jeden Fall Launch CSM = Enabled und OS Type = Other OS stehen. Das startet dann die 16bit BIOS Emulation und Windows wird im alten 16bit Modus Modus gestartet, bis es in die eigentliche Architektur wechselt (32bit o. 64bit)

Zusätzlich würde ich noch Secure Boot und Fast Boot deaktivieren. Müsste sich eigentlich von Selber deaktivieren, aber das weiß man nie so genau. Beides hat im BIOS Modus keine Bedeutung.

Ansonsten sehe ich da im Handbuch für das Board keine weiteren Einstellungen zu diesem Thema.

Wenn C: mit NTFS formatiert wurde, wovon ich eigentlich mal ausgehe, dann hast Du tatsächlich eines der seltenen Boards mit UEFI NTFS Treiber (ntfs.efi). Das gibt es heute eigentlich nicht mehr, jedenfalls nicht dass ich wüsste.

Dann passt das eigentlich auch. Dann würde ich da nichts weiter ändern. Wenn die Hardware auch funktioniert, dann würde ich jetzt auch die Einstellungen betreffend der OPROMs (Optional ROMs) so lassen, wie sie sind.

Den C:\EFI Ordner kannst Du dann auch löschen. Der ist nur für UEFI gedacht. Der BIOS Modus verwendet den Ordner Boot.

Dass das UEFI Boot Menü dann u.U. bei Datenträgern, welche den EFI Ordner haben, dann dennoch UEFI zur Auswahl anzeigt, kannst Du ignorieren. Hat dann mit dem installierten Windows nichts zu tun.

Musst jetzt aber auch bedenken, dass Du eine kombinierte System-/Startpartition hast. Die automatischen Reparaturtools von Windows sind in diesem Fall nutzlos, da diese immer eine separate kleine Systempartition erwarten. Reparaturen können nur manuell in der Konsole durchgeführt werden.

Ich würde diese Aussage gern verstehen. Kann ich evtl. eine jetzt fehlende irgendwie geartete Partition, die Reparaturzwecken dient, noch nachrüsten? Ich komme auf diese Frage bei dem zunächst gescheiterten Versuch, eine Paragon Rettungsumgebung (ISO-Image) zu erstellen.

Es gibt 2 verschiedene Layouts von Standard Windows 10 Partitionen für MBR Disks (Legacy booting), auf die ich meine Installation evtl. umrüsten könnte, aber wie?
